Local Island
Craftsmanship

Allan Gildener and Sally Colwell share a passion for crafting turned wooden bowls that reflect the beauty of the Big Island. Allan, born and raised in south Kona, is inspired by the incredible variety of locally available tropical woods and the rich cultural history of the area. He especially loves to make round-bottomed calabashes, the traditional shape used by Hawaiian bowl makers going back centuries. Sally embellishes them with freehand pyrography, drawing inspiration from the island's diverse cultural influences (and often simply the beauty of their own yard.) Together they create functional and decorative art pieces that capture the essence of Hawaii's natural and cultural heritage.
